Eyelid Lift

You may be a candidate for Blepharoplasty (Bleph a ro plasty) or “Eyelid Lift” if you have excessive, sagging, or wrinkled upper or lower eyelid skin. An eyelid lift can also be helpful if you have excess upper eyelid skin that interferes with vision or if you have lost your natural upper eyelid crease. An eyelid lift may also be indicated if you have puffy pouches of fat in the upper or lower lids that create a tired or aged appearance.

The eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) procedure is intended to produce a more youthful and rested appearance of the eyes. Eyelid lifts may also widen your visual field if excessive upper lid skin has partially blocked your vision. It is a popular procedure in Chevy Chase and the Washington DC area.

UPPER LIDS

As we age, the elasticity of our skin decreases and we begin to see excess skin of the upper lid that can obscure our natural crease and even cause hooding or overhang of skin on the upper lid. Unfortunately, no amount of rest or creams will permanently reduce these symptoms.

A blepharoplasty can surgically remove excess skin and herniated/protruding fat. Incisions are concealed in the natural upper lid crease.

LOWER EYELIDS

If there is excess fat and skin of the lower lid, a fine incision below the lash line is made to remove fat and skin together. If only excess fat is present in the lower lids, it may be removed through an incision inside the lower lids with no external incision or scar. This will heal naturally over 24 hours and requires no stitches. This is called transconjunctival blepharoplasty.

This outpatient procedure takes about an hour under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. All sutures are usually removed within 4 to 6 days. Initial mild discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. Bruising around the eye area lasts from 5 to 7 days and can be hidden with make-up or sunglasses. Swelling progressively disappears in 1 to 2 weeks. Eye makeup can be used after sutures are removed. Contact lenses can be worn when comfortable — usually within 7 to 10 days.

If eyelid lift surgery is being done to improve the field of vision, insurance may cover upper lid surgery.  A visual field test may confirm visual field loss. Otherwise, eyelid lift is considered cosmetic, and the patient is responsible for payment.

Is a blepharoplasty right for you?

The best surgical candidates are healthy, non-smokers. Patients with dry eyes should consult their ophthalmologist before planning eyelid surgery. After eyelid surgery, our patients have a rested, brighter more youthful look
